It can take various forms, including spells, curses, evil eye, voodoo, Macumba. The ancient Roman Ritual explained how he had to face it. The new Rite, by contrast, states categorically that it is prohibited to do exorcisms in these cases. Absurd. The spells are by far the most common cause of possessions and harm caused by the devil, at least 90 percent of cases.
This is like telling exorcists to stop carrying out exorcisms. Paragraph 16 states, solemnly, that you should not do exorcisms if one is certain of the presence of the devil. This is a masterpiece of incompetence: the certainty that the devil is present in a person, it is only doing the exorcism. Moreover, the drafters of Ritual did not realize that, on both points, contradicting the Catechism of the Catholic Church, stating that to do exorcisms, in the case of diabolic possession, as in cases of diseases caused by the devil. Amorth: Not at all! In these ten years, two commissions have worked in the ritual: one composed of cardinals, which dealt with the the notes, ie, the original provisions, and another that dealt with the sentences. Amorth: As requested by the Second Vatican Council, the different parts of the Roman Ritual were gradually revised and amended. Exorcists expect him to play the title XII, that is, the Ritual of Exorcism. But apparently it was not considered a relevant issue, as the years passed and nothing happened. Then suddenly, the June 4, 1990, Ritual was published interim test. This was a real surprise for us, because we had not been consulted in advance. - HOW WAS YOUR COMMENTS RECEIVED?
Amorth: Very bad, and got nothing. We were inspired by the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, in which the Church is described as the "People of God." At number 28, it talks about the collaboration between priests and bishops, and the number 37, it says, clearly, even referring to the laity, that "because of the knowledge, competence and preeminence they hold, are empowered, indeed sometimes the duty, to present their views on the issues concerning the good of the Church. " This is exactly what we did. But we were too naive to think that the provisions of Vatican II had reached the Roman Congregations. Instead, we hit a wall of rejection and scorn. The Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship issued a report, the Commission of Cardinals, in which he said that those who were contacted, were bishops, not priests and exorcists. And regarding our humble attempt to provide assistance and experts, he added, quote: "You should also note that a group of exorcists and demonologists, which then created an international Association, were orchestrating a campaign against the rite." An indecent accusation: we have never orchestrated a campaign! The Ritual was intended for us, and yet, the commissions had been convened to any competent person. For this, it was logical that we try to give our opinion.
- SO YOU WANT TO SAY THAT THE NEW RITUAL IS UNUSABLE IN ITS FIGHT AGAINST THE DEVIL
?
Amorth: Yes wanted to give us a blunt weapon. Have been eliminated effective sentences, sentences that were twelve centuries of existence were replaced by new ineffective prayers. But luckily, at the last moment, gave us a lifeline.
- WHAT?
Amorth: The new Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Jorge Medina, added a notification, the Ritual, which specified that exorcists are not required to use this Ritual and that, if may wish to seek permission from their bishops, to continue using the old ritual. In an attempt by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Medina's own, to introduce into the Ritual an article, then, was Article 38 - by authorizing the exorcists to use the earlier ritual. Undoubtedly, it was an extreme maneuver to fend off the great errors contained in the definitive Ritual.
But the efforts of the two cardinals were not successful. Cardinal Medina, who understood what was at risk decided to give us this lifeline, adding a separate notification.
- HOW ARE YOU SEEN, exorcisms, WITHIN THE CHURCH?
Amorth: We are very badly treated. Our brother priests, in charge of this delicate task, are seen as crazy, as fanatics. In general, even condoned by the same bishops who appointed them.
- WHAT HAS BEEN THE most striking features of this hostility?
Amorth: We held an international convention of exorcists near Rome, and ask that the Pope received. Non-pressed, and avoid adding another hearing to the many already have, just ask that we receive at a public hearing Wednesday in the Plaza de San Pedro. Not even ask that you appoint in your personal greetings. - YOU FIGHT, DAILY WITH THE DEVIL. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SUCCESS OF SATAN?
Amorth: That gets us to believe that there is. And he almost did it. Even within the Church. We have a clergy and an episcopate who no longer believe in the devil, in exorcisms, in the extraordinary evil that the devil can cause, and not even in power, he has given us Jesus to expel demons. For three centuries the Latin Church, in contrast to the Orthodox and several Protestant denominations, has dropped almost completely, the ministry exorcism. Amorth: There is a book written by the best known French exorcist, Isidoro FROC, entitled The Exorcist, who and what they do. This book, translated into Italian, at the request of the French Episcopal Conference. Nowhere book says that the exorcists, in some cases, do exorcisms. The author has stated, repeatedly, told French television he has never done exorcisms and never will. A hundred French exorcists, only five of them believe in the devil and do exorcisms. The rest sent to the psychiatrist to the people who addressed them. And the bishops are the first victims of this situation of the Catholic Church in which belief in the existence of the devil is in the process of disappearing.
Before I left this new ritual, the German Bishops wrote a letter to Cardinal Ratzinger, in which he stated that it was unnecessary to make a new Ritual because exorcisms should no longer be practiced.
- WHO ARE THE BISHOPS MUST APPOINT THE EXORCIST?
Amorth: Yes, when a priest is appointed bishop, he finds an article of the Code of Canon Law, which authorizes it, completely, to appoint exorcists. The least one can ask a bishop who has attended at least, an exorcism, since it must make an important decision. Unfortunately, this almost never occurs. But if a bishop receives a request would be of exorcism, that is, not made by someone alienated and not act accordingly, commits a mortal sin. Amorth: When I was a kid, my old parish priest taught me that there are eight sacraments: the eighth is ignorance. The eighth sacrament saves more people than the other seven combined. To commit mortal sin, there must be a serious cause, but also requires the full knowledge and deliberate consent. This omission of help from many bishops is a serious cause. But these bishops are ignorant: there is, therefore, full knowledge or deliberate consent.

Amorth: No. I'll tell you a story. When I met Father Pellegrino Ernetti, a noted exorcist, who served for forty years in Venice, said: "If I could talk to the pope, I would say that I find too many bishops who do not believe in the devil." The following afternoon, Father Ernetti came to tell me that morning he had received John Paul II. But let's be clear: someone is formally heretical, if accused of committing an error and it will persist.
